New York City’s Downtown Manhattan Heliport, operated by Saker Aviation is one of the most recognized film locations in the greater downtown New York area. Blockbuster films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, and successful HBO series’ like Succession all have some direct roots tying them to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport.
This 62 ft x 62 ft concrete helicopter landing facility, located at Pier 6 on the East River has been an integral piece of real estate for the downtown Manhattan area since December 8, 1960, when it was first opened to serve as a heliport shuttle location serving Newark Liberty International Airport (ECW), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). All scheduled flights to and from this location ceased activity in the mid-1980s. In 2009 all services were ceased to the heliport when US Helicopter ended its operations providing hourly flights to JFK.
The Downtown Manhattan Heliport now serves as the traditional landing facility for the President of the United States when he visits New York. This was also the heliport used by former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg to shuttle himself between Bloomberg L.P. and Johns Hopkins Universities when he was chairman of both institutions.
Besides being a history-rich location in the downtown Manhattan area, this is one of the most used locations for film and television alike.
The Downtown Manhattan Heliport has served as a backdrop for several movies and television shows.
